CanB013
Canaanite bronze figurine of a god.
Middle Bronze Age II: 2000-1550 BC.
H. 10 cm. (4 in.) not including tenon. [11.2 cm. (4 3/8 in.) with tenon].
Missing inserted sceptres, otherwise perfect. Fine green patina.
$ 9,000.
The god is standing frontal with straight legs, his arms are raised to the level of the shoulders with fisted hands, to hold inserted attributes, of which the one in the left hand partly remained. He is naked, wearing a short conical crown.
The head is modelled with prominent features of the face, with two big ears, long sharp nose which continues from the forehead, two big rounded eyes with incised line in the center, and an incised mouth in a slight angle. The figure has a long neck and slim flat body. Two long tenons continue from the feet.
The god is standing, holding his hands high, in a posture of power, with a strong expression in his face and in the attitude of the head with the long neck.
The style is typical of the first half of the 2nd Mill. BC. The short conical crown, the face features, the proportions with the long neck continue the artistic tradition of the end of the 3rd Mill. BC., and can be compared with the style of joint figurines.
