Etruscan bronze Herakles.
4th-3rd century BC.
Height: 11.4 cm (4 ½ in.)
Missing attributes, otherwise perfect. Fine dark green patina.
$ 9,000.
Herakles, the Mythological hero, is standing nude in the ‘Contrapposto’ position with his left leg bent forward and his right leg supporting his weight. The Nemean lion skin covers his head and shoulders and tied over the chest, flung from his back, over his left arm. His right arm is raised to the level of his head with a fisted hand, which was holding one of his missing attributes, possibly the club. His left arm is stretched from the elbow forward, the hand was holding the second attribute, possibly the bow.
The figure is finely modeled in a naturalistic style, in a heroic psture, with fine details of the face, the muscular body and the lion skin.
