Hellenistic bronze balsamarium in the form of a bearded satyr. draped in a long cloak. Alexandria (?)
2nd - 1st century BC.
Height: 6.5 cm. (2 1/2 in.)
Very fine. Missing cover and feet. Dark brown patina with spots of a green and red. Mounted.

The fat bearded satyr is standing, draped in a tight, thin cloak reaching his knees, showing his body lines. This rare anthropomorphic vessel was used for cosmetics (-balsamarium). The cover formed the top of the head.
