GrB030
Late Hellenistic-Early Roman bronze lion.
2nd century BC – 1st century AD
H. 14.5 cm (5 3/4 in.)
The fangs are chipped, otherwise complete. Richly corroded, with layers of rich red and green patina. Remains of two iron nails for attachment at the sides of the mouth.
Sold
The lion head is frontal with open mouth. The face features are realistically depicted, with roaring expression. The hair of the mane, the eyes, the nose and the jaws are finely modeled with incised details.
The plastic manner of the sculpture, without a flat frame around, is typical of the Late Hellenistic – Early Roman depictions of a lion head.
