Roman Glass

RG073
Early Roman deep amber glass Medusa Janus head flask.
1st century AD
H. 7 cm (2 3/4 in.)
Repaired with minor restoration. White encrustation.

Sold

The flask body blown in two parts mold in the form of a Janiform head of Medusa. A widening cylindrical neck with flaring folded rim.

The Medusa, with different facial expression on each side, is framed with heavy curly hair.  The head is finely modeled with classical idealized features with strong expression, which forms a fine sculpture in glass. The glass deep amber color is rare, and unusual for this type of glass head flask.

Ex. Louis-Gabriel Bellon Collection, France, 1819-1899.
