The Sphinx, a mythological creature combining the head of a woman and the body of a winged lioness, is sitting in profile on its hind legs on a Ionian capital, its head turned to the left to face frontally. Its wings are lifted and curled upwards and the tail is in “S” shape.
The Sphinx is depicted in fine Archaic style in a frozen pose. The face is of a beautiful woman with stylized long hair, large eyes and shaped lips in Archaic smile. The head is surmounted with cylindrical headdress of the polos type. The body and limbs are long and slender, and ornamental details incised in the wings and the column capital.
