Roman bronze oinochoe with panther handle.
1st century AD.
H. 15.6 cm.
Handle re-attached, otherwise perfect. Fine polished reddish-brown patina with green spots.

The jug with piriform body on concave footed base with short trefoil neck and rim. Handle attached from shoulder to rim. The rim with thick ridge and the lower and upper parts of the footed base bordered with concentric ridges. The jug is solid with thick walls.
The top of the handle terminating in a panther’s head with its forelegs stretched around the back of the rim. The lower attachment of the handle decorated with engraved fruits basket flanked by a torch on its right and a sword on its left.
The panther is finely modeled with lively and powerful expression. Its paws are modeled with details of the anatomic parts.
The fine modeling of the panther is in harmony with the classical form of the oinochoe.
